What to Do If You Lose Your Pet

Dog Sitting with a Leash OnWhen your cherished dog or cat strays from home, it can be an upsetting experience for you and your pet. Here are some tips that we hope will help you find your pet.

  • Contact Prescott Valley Animal Services
  • Contact Yavapai Humane Society
    • Phone: (928) 445-2666
  • Search the neighborhood. Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times each day. Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and information on how you can be reached if your pet is found.
  • Advertise. Post notices at your community center, veterinary offices, pet supply stores and other locations. Include your pet's sex, age, weight, breed, color and any special markings. When describing your pet, leave out one identifying characteristic and ask the person who finds your pet to describe it.
  • Try the Internet. These sites may be able to help you out:
  • Be wary of pet-recovery scams. When speaking with a stranger about your lost pet and they have claimed to have found your pet, ask them to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information. Be cautious of people who request you give them money for the return of your pet. Notify the Prescott Valley Police of a possible scam.
  • Do not give up your search. Animals that have been lost for months or even years have been reunited with their owners.

A pet—even an indoor pet—has a better chance of being returned if they always wear a collar and an ID tag with your name, address, and telephone number. The Town of Prescott Valley requires that all dogs have current Dog Licenses. Click here for information licensing your pet. Also, speak with Yavapai Humane Society or your local veterinarian on how to microchip your pet.
