1. Logging in to Windows

Your username will be your first initial followed by your last name. For example, John Smith’s username would be jsmith. A temporary password will be associated with your account for initial authentication, which your supervisor can provide for you.

Once you have successfully logged in to Windows, each employee is required to set a password of their own. To do this, please press the following key combination:

‘Ctrl + Alt + Delete’

A list of options should populate your screen upon entering the key combination. Please choose ‘Change a password’ from this list. You will be prompted to enter your old / current password, which was used to log in previously, and a new password. The new password must be entered twice, and it must meet the requirements of the policy set forth by the IT Department. These requirements are as follows:

1. Minimum Length: Passwords must include at least 8 characters.

2. Complexity: Passwords must include upper- and lower-case letters and at least one or more number(s) and special character(s). Note: Password must not contain the user’s account name or the user’s full name.

3. Maximum Age: Passwords must be changed every 90 days.

4. Password History: Up to 5 passwords are remembered for each user. You must cycle through 5 new passwords before an old password can be reused.

It is recommended that users utilize a phrase that is easy to remember when creating a password. More complicated passwords that include different kinds of characters and combinations of words can prevent unauthorized access to your device and other systems. Tools currently available to hackers can crack simple passwords within seconds, but a complex password can take up to years.

Please be aware that your credentials (username and password) are the digital equivalent of your written signature. The user should be the only person to know their password. Any activities performed under a user’s profile are recorded as an action taken by the user, as the password is intended to provide authentication. To avoid any conflict with this, please do not give out your password unless circumstances warrant such action, and please lock your PC when you walk away from your desk, even for just a moment. This can easily be done by entering the following key combination:

‘Windows Key + L’

The credentials* you are now using to log in to Windows can be used for other systems as well, which are depicted in the following list:

1. Office 365

2. Town of Prescott Valley Intranet

3. Executime

*NOTE: You may hear others refer to these credentials as your “network password”.

The IT Department can assist with any issues you may experience in accessing your PC or other systems. However, there are a couple of exceptions. The following table includes systems managed by other departments:

*NOTE: You will hear this network storage space referred to as just the “P” drive as well.

2. Connecting to the Wireless Network

The wireless network connection is labeled as “PV Public”. This network has been configured with security in mind, but it is available to the public, so it does not require authentication. Please exercise caution while traversing this network.

For some mobile devices, such as laptops and tablets that were purchased for business purposes, we have another wireless network labeled “PV Staff”. These machines must be added manually from the administrative console before they can be connected to this network. Access requests for such devices can be submitted via Track-It.
